Cholelithiasis (gallstones) is the presence of one or more calculi (stones) in the gallbladder. Most people with gallstones (~80%) remain asymptomatic for years or their entire life. When symptoms occur, they are usually due to biliary colic (gallstone temporarily blocking the cystic duct) or complications (acute cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis with jaundice/cholangitis, gallstone pancreatitis, gallbladder cancer — rare).
There is no scientific evidence that homeopathy can dissolve gallstones, prevent their formation, or reliably eliminate them without surgery. Gallstones do not dissolve with homeopathic remedies in any reproducible or clinically meaningful way in humans. Claims of dissolution are anecdotal, from low-evidence case reports, or misinterpretations of natural passage of very small stones. The only proven methods to remove symptomatic gallstones are:
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gold standard for symptomatic stones)
- Rarely — open surgery, ERCP with sphincterotomy for common bile duct stones
- Oral dissolution therapy (ursodeoxycholic acid) works only for small cholesterol stones in functioning gallbladders and takes 6–24 months with high recurrence
Seek surgical/gastroenterology evaluation if you have recurrent biliary colic, acute cholecystitis, jaundice, fever, or pancreatitis. In Hyderabad, consult at AIG Hospitals (excellent GI unit), Yashoda, Apollo, KIMS, Care Hospitals, or government centers (Osmania/Gandhi Hospital) for ultrasound, LFTs, and surgical opinion.
Common Symptoms of Cholelithiasis
Asymptomatic — discovered incidentally on imaging.
Symptomatic (biliary colic — most common presentation):
- Sudden, severe, constant pain in right upper quadrant or epigastrium
- Pain often radiates to right shoulder blade or back
- Lasts 30 minutes to several hours (typically <6 hours)
- Triggered by fatty/heavy meals
- Nausea and vomiting (common)
- No fever (unless inflammation/infection develops)
Complicated gallstone disease:
- Acute cholecystitis: persistent pain >6 hours + fever + tenderness (Murphy’s sign)
- Choledocholithiasis: jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, fever/chills (cholangitis)
- Gallstone pancreatitis: severe epigastric pain radiating to back + elevated amylase/lipase
- Gallstone ileus (rare): bowel obstruction
Homeopathic remedies are chosen based on symptom similarity (pain type, modalities, digestive triggers). Below are the most commonly referenced remedies in homeopathic literature for biliary colic and cholelithiasis-like pictures — informational only.
Homeopathic Remedies for Cholelithiasis / Biliary Colic Symptoms (One by One)
- Chelidonium Majus The single most frequently indicated remedy for gallstone colic and biliary symptoms. Severe right-sided pain under right scapula/shoulder blade radiating to back; jaundice or yellowish tinge; bitter taste in mouth; nausea/vomiting after eating; clay-colored stools; pain worse after fatty food; better hot drinks/food or pressure on painful area. Classic for hepatic/biliary colic with right-sided referral. Typical potency & dose: 30C; 3–5 pellets every 15–30 minutes during acute colic (max 4–6 doses), then reduce to 2–3 times daily or stop as pain subsides. Mother tincture (Q) 5–10 drops in water 2–3 times daily sometimes used (under guidance).
- Berberis Vulgaris For sharp, shooting, stitching, or radiating pains from gallbladder to back/shoulder; colic-like pain worse motion/pressure; better standing/stretching; often accompanied by renal colic symptoms (burning urine, sediment). Common for radiating biliary/renal colic. Typical potency & dose: 30C; 3–5 pellets every 15–30 minutes during acute colic, reduce frequency as pain eases.
- Carduus Marianus (Milk Thistle) For soreness/pain in right hypochondrium; jaundice; nausea/vomiting; bitter belching; portal congestion; liver/gallbladder tenderness; better motion. Often suggested for alcoholic or toxic liver/gallbladder involvement with colic. Typical potency & dose: Mother tincture (Q) 5–10 drops in water 2–3 times daily, or 6C/30C; 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily.
- Lycopodium Clavatum For right-sided pain/fullness in right hypochondrium; bloating/gas after small meals; flatulence (worse 4–8 p.m.); craving sweets; low confidence/anxiety; digestive sluggishness; intolerance to fatty foods. For chronic gallbladder symptoms with bloating. Typical potency & dose: 30C or 200C; 3–5 pellets 1–2 times daily or less frequent (chronic/constitutional).
- Nux Vomica For colic after alcohol, rich/spicy/fatty food, overeating, or stress; spasmodic pain; ineffectual urging for stool; irritable/oversensitive; nausea/vomiting; bloating; worse morning/after indulgence. For stress/alcohol-triggered biliary colic. Typical potency & dose: 30C; 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily or every 4 hours during acute flare.
- China Officinalis (Cinchona) For bloating, gas, undigested food in stool; weakness/exhaustion after attacks; bitter taste; worse after eating fruit/dairy; debility from malabsorption. For post-attack weakness and digestive debility. Typical potency & dose: 30C; 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily or every 4 hours as needed.
General Dosing Guidelines (Informational Only):
- Use 30C potency commonly for acute biliary colic.
- 3–5 pellets under tongue (avoid food/strong smells 15 min before/after).
- Frequency: Every 15–60 minutes initially during severe colic (max 6–8 doses first few hours), taper quickly as pain subsides.
- Stop if no improvement in 24–48 hours or worsening — seek emergency surgical/gastroenterology care (acute cholecystitis often requires hospitalization and cholecystectomy).
These are traditional symptom-matching suggestions — not proven to dissolve gallstones, treat cholecystitis, or replace surgery/antibiotics when indicated. In Hyderabad, remedies available at SBL, Reckeweg, Bakson pharmacies or homeopathic clinics. Prioritize ultrasound (to confirm gallstones/inflammation), surgical consultation, and guideline-based management. Acute biliary colic or cholecystitis is a surgical emergency in most cases — do not delay hospital evaluation if pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by fever/jaundice. Take care!
