Homeopathy Medicine for Aphthous Ulcer

Aphthous Ulcer (Canker Sores / Mouth Ulcers) – Introduction and Symptoms

Aphthous ulcers are small, painful, shallow open sores (ulcers) that develop inside the mouth — on the inner cheeks, lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, gums, or soft palate. They are the most common type of oral ulcer and are not contagious (unlike cold sores caused by herpes). They usually heal on their own in 7–14 days, but can be very uncomfortable.

Common Symptoms

  • One or more round/oval ulcers with a white/yellowish-gray center and bright red inflamed border
  • Sharp, burning or stinging pain, especially when eating, drinking, talking, or brushing teeth
  • Pain worse with spicy, salty, acidic, or hot foods/drinks
  • Difficulty eating or speaking in severe cases
  • Mild swelling of nearby lymph nodes (occasionally)
  • Recurrent episodes (recurrent aphthous stomatitis) in some people

Triggers / Risk Factors (often multiple)

  • Stress / emotional upset
  • Minor trauma (biting cheek, dental work, hard toothbrush)
  • Nutritional deficiencies (iron, B12, folate, zinc)
  • Food sensitivities (citrus, chocolate, nuts, gluten in some)
  • Hormonal changes (menstruation)
  • Weakened immunity
  • Family history

Important Note Most aphthous ulcers are self-limiting and benign. However, see a doctor/dentist if:

  • Ulcers last >2–3 weeks
  • Very large (>1 cm) or unusually painful
  • Frequent recurrences (more than 3–4 times/year)
  • Accompanied by fever, swollen glands, skin/genital ulcers, eye inflammation (may indicate Behçet’s disease, Crohn’s, celiac, or other systemic condition)

Homeopathy is commonly used for aphthous ulcers and many people report good symptomatic relief (pain reduction, faster healing, fewer recurrences) when the remedy matches the individual picture. It is supportive and works best when individualized.

Homeopathic Medicines (Most Commonly Used for Aphthous Ulcers)

Take 3–5 pellets under the tongue, away from food/strong smells. Stop as soon as significant improvement occurs. Do not repeat unnecessarily. Consult a qualified homeopath for best matching and potency — especially for frequent/recurrent cases.

  1. Borax (Sodium Borate) Most frequently indicated remedy. Ulcers bleed easily on touch or when eating, very sensitive to touch/slightest pressure, hot mouth, child cries before urinating (common keynote), aphthae in children, fear of downward motion. Usual dose: 30C, 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily during active ulcers.
  2. Mercurius Solubilis / Merc Vivus For ulcers with profuse salivation, bad metallic taste, moist mouth, offensive breath, ulcers with irregular/indented edges, worse at night/sweating. Tongue flabby, indented by teeth. Usual dose: 30C, 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily.
  3. Nitricum Acidum Deep, irregular, zig-zag edged ulcers with splinter-like or sharp sticking pains, bleed easily, very sensitive to touch, offensive discharge, cracks at corners of mouth. Usual dose: 30C, 3–5 pellets 2 times daily.
  4. Arsenicum Album Burning pains > by warmth/hot drinks, extreme restlessness/anxiety, thirst for small sips frequently, chilly patient, ulcers worse midnight. Usual dose: 30C, 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily during painful phase.
  5. Sulphur Recurrent ulcers, burning sensation, red inflamed margin, worse warmth of bed, hungry at 11 a.m., untidy/hot patient, history of skin complaints. Usual dose: 30C or 200C, 3–5 pellets once daily or less frequent (often constitutional).
  6. Calendula Officinalis For very painful, raw-feeling ulcers, promotes rapid healing, prevents secondary infection. Can be used as mouthwash (10 drops mother tincture in half glass warm water, rinse 3–4 times/day). Usual dose: 30C internally 2–3 times daily + topical rinse.
  7. Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum Extremely sensitive/painful ulcers (even air aggravates), splinter-like pains, chilly patient, irritability, tendency to suppuration. Usual dose: 30C, 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily.
  8. Baptisia Tinctoria Dark red ulcers with putrid breath, offensive mouth, feels as if mouth is burnt/raw, prostration, stupor-like state in severe cases. Usual dose: 30C, 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily.

Quick Supportive Tips

  • Avoid spicy, acidic, salty, hot foods during active ulcers
  • Rinse with salt water or baking soda solution (1 tsp in glass warm water) 3–4 times/day
  • Use soft toothbrush, avoid trauma
  • Supplement B12, iron, folate, zinc if deficient (after blood test)
  • Manage stress (very common trigger)

If ulcers are very frequent or severe, consult both a homeopath (for constitutional treatment to reduce recurrences) and a physician/dentist to rule out underlying systemic causes.
