Broken Nose (nasal fracture) is one of the most common facial fractures, usually caused by direct blunt trauma (sports injury, fall, assault, accident). The nasal bones are thin and prominent, so they fracture easily. Most nasal fractures are simple (closed, no significant displacement) and heal well with conservative care, but some are displaced, open, comminuted, or associated with septal injury/hematoma.
Very important – medical priority Any suspected nasal fracture needs prompt evaluation by an ENT surgeon (or maxillofacial/plastic surgeon) within 3–7 days (ideally within first 3–5 days) while swelling is still present but before bones begin to set in a crooked position. Do NOT delay — if the nose is visibly crooked, significantly displaced, or there is septal hematoma (painful bluish swelling inside nose), urgent drainage and reduction may be needed to prevent permanent deformity, breathing obstruction, or abscess.
Red-flag signs — go to emergency / ENT immediately
- Severe epistaxis (heavy nosebleed) that does not stop with pressure
- Clear fluid leaking from nose (possible CSF leak — skull base fracture)
- Difficulty breathing through nose
- Severe pain not relieved by usual painkillers
- Visible deformity / crooked nose
- Eye swelling, bruising around both eyes (“raccoon eyes” — possible orbital fracture)
- Double vision, numbness in upper lip/teeth (possible midface fracture)
Typical Symptoms of Broken Nose
- Immediate severe pain at time of injury
- Rapid swelling of nose and around eyes
- Bruising (black eyes — periorbital ecchymosis)
- Nosebleed (epistaxis) — usually mild to moderate
- Crooked or deviated appearance of nose (may become obvious after swelling subsides)
- Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
- Crunching sensation (crepitus) when touching nose
- Blood clot inside nose (septal hematoma — very painful, bluish bulge)
Homeopathic Medicines for Broken Nose (Supportive / Acute Phase Only)
Homeopathy is never a substitute for proper reduction (re-alignment) of a displaced fracture, drainage of septal hematoma, or surgical fixation if needed. It is only used supportively in the very early phase for pain, swelling, bruising, and bleeding — after fracture has been assessed and stabilized.
- Arnica montana The first and most important remedy for any acute trauma with bruising and soreness. Key indications: Sore, bruised feeling “as if beaten”; pain after blow; rapid swelling and black-blue discoloration; worse touch/jarring; suits immediate post-injury phase of nasal fracture to limit bruising, swelling, and pain. Typical potency & dose: 200C — 3–5 pellets single dose as soon as possible after injury (one time); or 30C — 3–5 pellets every 2–4 hours for first 24–48 hours (acute phase), then reduce to 3 times daily for 3–5 days.
- Symphytum officinale Classical “knitbone” remedy for bone pain and fractures. Key indications: Deep, sore, bruised bone pain “as if broken”; pain after trauma; periosteal soreness; suits nasal bone fracture pain once acute swelling phase passes (after Arnica). Typical potency & dose: 200C — single dose 2–3 days after injury (after Arnica phase); or 30C — 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily for 7–10 days during painful bone-healing phase.
- Ledum palustre For cold, black-blue swelling and pain better cold applications. Key indications: Black-blue discoloration; swelling feels cold to touch; pain better cold/ice; suits nasal fracture with marked cold, black-blue ecchymosis around nose/eyes. Typical potency and dose: 30C or 200C — 3–5 pellets every 3–4 hours for first 48–72 hours during bruising/swelling phase (short-term).
- Hypericum perforatum For nerve pain, shooting pains, or numbness after trauma. Key indications: Sharp, shooting pains along nerve paths; numbness/tingling after injury; suits nasal fracture with nerve irritation, shooting facial pain, or numbness. Typical potency and dose: 200C — single dose early after injury; or 30C — 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily for 5–7 days during neuralgic phase.
- Ruta graveolens For deep periosteal bone pain and bruising. Key indications: Deep bruised, sore feeling in bone/periosteum; pain after blow; worse cold/damp; better warmth/motion; suits nasal bone pain with periosteal soreness after acute phase. Typical potency and dose: 30C — 3–5 pellets 2–3 times daily for 7–14 days during bone pain phase.
General usage notes
- First 24–72 hours (acute trauma phase): Arnica 200C single dose or 30C frequent repetition → Ledum if cold/blue swelling dominant
- Days 3–10 (bone pain / healing phase): Symphytum 200C single dose or Ruta 30C repeated
- Nerve pain / shooting: Hypericum 200C single dose
- Never continue frequent dosing beyond 10–14 days without reassessment
- Always combine with:
- Cold compresses first 48 hours (ice pack wrapped in cloth, 10–15 min every hour)
- Head elevation while sleeping
- Avoid nose blowing or picking for 2–3 weeks
- Urgent ENT evaluation within 3–7 days for possible closed reduction
Re-evaluate with ENT / maxillofacial surgeon if:
- Nose remains visibly crooked after swelling subsides (usually 5–7 days)
- Breathing difficulty persists
- Severe pain, fever, or pus discharge develops
- No improvement in pain/swelling after 5–7 days
Homeopathy plays a very limited supportive role in the acute phase (pain, bruising, swelling) — the definitive management of a broken nose is clinical assessment and timely reduction if displaced. Seek ENT/maxillofacial evaluation promptly (ideally within first week). Do not delay medical assessment thinking homeopathy will realign bones — it cannot.
